Fantastic Fest 2011

Just finished up the poster for the 2011 Fantastic Fest.  It’s the second year in a row I’ve worked on it, and I enjoy the hell out of it every time.  This year they wanted a Kaiju/Yokai extravanganza.   Since I grew up on Godzilla, Ultraman, & Johnny Sakko, this was an extra bonus for me.  The tricky part was, since there was no license, making all the monsters close to the originals, but different enough.  Some are trickier to spot than others.ffpostersepweb.jpg

Bad Meets Evil CD Packaging

So Hell:The Sequel came out today…so I thought I’d show the packaging that I did for it.  The cover was shot and created by photographer Danny Hastings - who, if you are a rap fan at all, you’ve seen his work.  Wu, Gangstarr, KRS, and Nas covers to name a few.  Classic stuff.  Other shots of his from the shoot were also used throughout the interior.

We did three versions - Standard Explicit, Deluxe Explicit & Edited.  This is the Deluxe Explicit, the only difference in design being the additon of “Deluxe Edition” and green color change on the front.  For the design of the packaging, I wanted to go with a sort of “book of the dead” feel, but not be completely overt with it.  Kind of a book of the Dead meets old religious books meets a madman’s diary.  Something along those lines.  I used some old hi-res book textures I found (thanks Bittbox!) and created a bunch of sketch drawings that coincided with a particular lyric or song title to pepper the inside throughout with.  I made everything kind of a dried red/brown to give the impression it was drawn in blood.

CD & Tray - I created this ghost originally for the cover before I knew what Danny was doing, I wanted them to be coming out of the speakers.  So instead I used them for the CD and once again on the inside.

Bad Meets Evil Logos Part II…

 bad-meets-evil-fast-lane-eminem-royce-da-59.png

Here are the other two logos that were done for the Bad Meets Evil project.  What you see here is from a screen cap of the “Fastlane” video & teaser.

The first you see is the letterform.  It’s a “B”(bad) made from the old english style “D” with a backwards “E” (Evil or Em) inside of it.  Hence B meets E.  Both of these are used in the CD packaging and on some other items as well.

The second is the visual mark.(bottom left) The left side represents an outlaw or marauder - a skull with the bandana over the face, or what could be classified as “Bad”.  I felt like this side was in keeping with the original western type thing used in the original song.  They also use the western thing in the new promo.  The right side represents Em’s previous “Jason” persona, or what could be classified as Evil.

Bad Meets Evil

screen-shot-2011-05-16-at-40000-pm.pngJust finished up the logowork and am now finishing up the packaging for Bad Meets Evil.  We did three different logotypes - a text based logo, which is this one, and also a letterform mark and visual mark.  I think they came out pretty nice.  I will post up the packaging once it gets closer to release.

Star Trek & The Valley of Gwangi

A couple of recently released posters for Mondo.  The first is a Star Trek piece, based on the 1966 two part episode “The Menagerie”.  These were released a couple weeks ago and have long sold out.   I initially struggled with this Trek piece, as the first version I did based on “A Private Little War” was shelved, due to a communication mix up and my dumb ass not sending a sketch first.  I still thought it came out decent so I’m going to post it up here.  Here’s the Menagerie…star_trek_the_menagerie_screen_print_by_mike_saputo.jpg

…and the original “A Private Little War”-

Also being released today via Mondo is my “The Valley of Gwangi” print.  18×24 5 color screenprint.  This was the 1969 movie most notable for Ray Harryhausen’s visual effects.  Drops at a random time today.

Karakasa Games logo

I got approached by Karakasa Games to work on a logo for a game they are working on, which then led to working on a logo for their company.  The name Karakasa, or Kasa Obake (”Umbrella Ghost”), comes from a japanese folk legend about a form of spirit that originates from objects reaching their 100th year of existence and becoming animate.  Karakasa in particular are spirits of Parasols.  It was definitely an interesting logo to develop.  Good times.  What you see below in color is the final logo, and I threw in a few concept sketches below it.  Check Karakasa Games out herekasalogo_web.jpg

Star Wars Galaxy card

So since the Topps Star Wars Galaxy cards came out the other day, I can officially post mine.  When I was first asked to do this I was pretty excited, and it was open to pretty much anything seen, unseen, or inferred to exist or have happened in the Star Wars universe.  That’s a ridiculously large amount of material to choose from!  But I started to get lost in what I wanted to do…should I do one on obscure characters like Skorr or Garindan?   Then I eased back and realized why not just do a piece on one of your favorite characters from the movie?  But rather than the male Tusken, why not do one on the rest of the family.  Anyways, here’s what I came up with.  A female Tusken Raider with her Uli-Ah on their seasonal journey to the Needles.swglxy_card.jpg

Game Over; or How I Learned to Stop Trying Because I was Broke.

This was the piece I did for the Multiplayer group show at Gallery1988.  This game blew my mind (and wallet) as a kid, and was the first game that popped in my head when asked to be in this show.  It’s an 18×24 screenprint, you can buy it here.dlpostersep.jpg
